Clinical Application Coordinator Curriculum

CAC Roles & Responsibilities:  The Clinical Application Coordinator Roles and Responsibilities course is the first course for those interested in the CAC position. It is designed to identify candidates for the position and provides an overview of the role for the CAC position, background and skills needed, and how this role fits into a health care organization. The tone and philosophy of this course serves as a foundation for further CAC training.

VistA Orientation:  The VistA Orientation course provides background and history on VistA, the foundation for CPRS, and other clinical computing applications based on VistA. This course gives a brief history of VistA, describes MUMPS, and defines acronyms and conventions used in VistA that are useful to a Clinical Application Coordinator.

User Setup:  In the VistA environment, user setup is a cooperative process that involves both the System Administrator and the Clinical Application Coordinator. The User Setup course explains this relationship, defines the Clinical Application Coordinator part of the process, and takes a student through the user creation process.

Admissions Discharge Transfer / PIMS / Scheduling:  The Admissions Discharge Transfer / Patient Information Management System (PIMS) / Scheduling course examines these VistA modules to see how PIMS is the background system that populates and supports CPRS with patient demographics, clinic design, patient scheduling, and reporting of clinician and patient activities.

CPRS [Tabs] - End User Training:  The CPRS (Tabs) – End User Training course examines how CPRS provides the GUI interface into the VistA system enabling users to add or view patient data. This course will enable students to navigate CPRS and perform the various operations for patient care.

CPRS - Text Integration Unit:  The Text Integration Utilities (TIU) / Notes course examines how TIU is the framework for all note writing and templating functionality in CPRS. This course goes over the tools for the set up of note titles, templates, and health summary objects. Additionally, TIU documents are governed by rules called Authorization Subscription Utilities (ASU) that governs the assignment of privileges, as they relate to note viewing, editing, and signing.

CPRS - Problems List:  The CPRS – Problem List course examines how CPRS is able to create a problem list mapped to CPT codes which enables users to track a patient’s problems over time. This course will enable students to navigate the problem list through the Graphical User Interface and will review various menus for set up options and parameters in the List Manager which allow for customization of the problem list.

CPRS - Adverse Reaction Tracking:  The CPRS – Adverse Reaction Tracking course will introduce the student to the Adverse Reaction Tracking module of CPRS. In this course the student will learn to view allergies / adverse reactions of a patient, enter allergic reactions, turn on and off order checks, and understand the capabilities and limitations of order checks.

CPRS - Orders:  The CPRS – Orders course will teach students about the Order Menu Management options and guide them through the use of each of them. The course will also teach students how to create personal quick orders on the CPRS orders tab.

Laboratory:  Outside of the Veterans Affairs system, interfaces with private laboratories must be developed in order to have the laboratory results entered directly into VistA; this is an advanced topic and the Laboratory course will focus on examining how laboratory results can be entered manually into the VistA system. This course will also look at how reference values can be adjusted to match those of the institutions’ laboratory.

Patient Care Encounter:  The Patient Care Encounter (PCE) course examines the VistA module, accessible through the Notes portion of CPRS, which captures patient data obtained during an outpatient patient encounter, such as problems treated, procedures done, and other provider information among other aspects of a patient visit. The PCE course will show a student how to create clinical reminders and track immunizations, skin test, patient education, and other health factors. This course will also demonstrate how PCE is used to aid with billing through capturing CPT and ICD-9 codes.

Notifications:  The Notifications course will examine the CPRS Notification System to determine how it works in conjunction with ancillary medical services and providers to ensure the timely and safe delivery of patient care through an electronic alert and tracking network. This course will show students how to effectively set and manage the notification system in a health care institution.
